Miyako Island Resort Project

We are thrilled to have designed and constructed a breathtaking new landscape for the Miyako Island Resort, a serene oasis for travelers seeking a touch of Japanese tranquility. Several years ago, we worked on a different section of this idyllic retreat, but with evolving guest preferences and an unwavering commitment to excellence, a fresh concept was imperative to cater to their refined tastes. The resort’s deep-rooted Japanese heritage informed every aspect of our design approach. Incorporating principles of Shinto and Zen aesthetics, we aimed to create an environment that harmonizes with nature and promotes inner peace.

Style

The resort’s landscape is meticulously paved with sleek, stone-inspired tiles, creating a seamless flow throughout its expansive premises. A highlight of the backyard is a serene Zen garden, featuring a meticulously maintained dry stone lanterns and a serene pond with koi fish. A sliding door at the rear opens onto a covered outdoor tea house and a tranquil tatami mat area, perfect for meditative moments. This area seamlessly transitions into a pebble-mosaic walkway, bordered by weathered wooden screens adorned with pine needle art, complementing the serene ambiance. The side borders feature custom stone walls lined with camellia bushes in bloom, their vibrant pink petals adding a splash of color. A dedicated meditation pavilion stands gracefully on one side of the resort.

Screened with textured bamboo panels, the fully irrigated water system and dust control measures are discreetly integrated. Garden lighting, powered by dawn sensors, and air-conditioning units ensure the resort’s functional sides remain both practical and aesthetically pleasing. The open front yard, especially the driveway area, is designed to accommodate luxury vehicles. A grand, 8-meter-wide sliding door welcomes guests into the resort. The front water feature showcases a statue of a meditating Buddha, creating a serene focal point. The stone-inspired paving ties in with the backyard, enhancing the seamless feel. Mature boxwood hedges, carefully nurtured for over a decade, have been repurposed into new garden beds. Unique stones, used to cover the entire backyard garden bed, are also featured at the front.

Challenges

Access to the backyard was limited, necessitating creative solutions. A compact excavator cautiously navigated the tight space, while wheelbarrows were used to transport over 70 cubic meters of soil. Adhering to Japanese cultural beliefs, specific design elements had to be incorporated, strategically positioned based on the sun’s path and the natural contour of the site.

After creating a 2D design, a 3D video walkthrough was developed, providing clients with a vivid understanding of the completed project. Upon project completion, the property underwent power washing for pristine cleanliness, including window cleaning. A professional paving company was engaged to clean and seal the paving stones.
